Welcome

It is with great pleasure that I extend a warm welcome to you on behalf of the entire school community. As the Executive Headteacher, I am honoured to introduce you to the vibrant and nurturing environment that defines our school.

At Archbishop of York’s C.E Junior School, our vision is encapsulated in the acronym PRIDE, which reflects our commitment to nurturing each individual to flourish, achieve, and live out Christian values. We strive to instil the following principles in our pupils: Positive, Respectful, Inclusive, Determined, and Engaged. These values are the foundation upon which our school community is built, guiding us in creating a supportive and enriching educational experience for every child.

As a Church of England school, we take pride in our Church School status. Our Christian ethos is woven into the fabric of daily life, fostering a sense of community, compassion, and understanding among our pupils. We believe in providing a holistic education that not only focuses on academic excellence but also on the spiritual, moral, and social development of each child.

Education, to us, is a partnership. We believe in collaboration between teachers, parents, children, and the wider community to create a nurturing and enriching learning environment. We encourage you to arrange a visit to witness our school in action. Seeing first-hand how we implement our vision and values will give you a true sense of the warm and supportive atmosphere we have cultivated.

I also want to take this opportunity to share that I am the Executive Headteacher of Bishopthorpe Infant School. Our close partnership and working relationship between Archbishop of York’s C.E Junior School and Bishopthorpe Infant School ensure the best provision for the children of Bishopthorpe. Together, we strive to create a seamless educational journey for our pupils, promoting continuity and excellence.  Both schools are part of South York Multi Academy Trust (SYMAT) creating a formidable partnership committed to enriching the educational experience for our local communities.

If you have any questions or if you would like to learn more about our school, please do not hesitate to get in touch. We would be delighted to meet you and are confident that you will enjoy your visit to Archbishop of York’s C.E Junior School.

We look forward to meeting you!

Kerry Davies, Executive Headteacher

Christian Vision, Values and Ethos

Through AYJS PRIDE we nurture each individual to flourish, achieve and live out Christian values:

POSITIVE | RESPECTFUL | INCLUSIVE | DETERMINED | ENGAGED

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart.’ Colossians 3:23

School Aims

  • Archbishop of York’s Church of England Junior School is an inclusive school that fosters a sense of pride and belonging.
  • We value each child and adult within our community and endeavour to lay the foundation of respect and appreciation for others – celebrating and encouraging individuality.
  • We aim to encourage our children to become life-long, independent, self motivated learners who aspire to achieve their potential, to the fullest extent, both within and beyond the curriculum.
  • Our broad, balanced and creative curriculum encourages our children to ask questions and develop lively, inquiring minds within a stimulating and motivating environment.
  • We aim to establish and maintain a strong team spirit, which enables everyone associated with our school to work collaboratively and to share knowledge and understanding with all.
  • We strive to nurture positive mindset and active, healthy lifestyles.
  • Through the Christian ethos of our school, we want children to develop the moral values and social skills that will help them become caring, respectful, responsible members of our school and the wider community.

School Rules

  • Follow instructions
  • Listen, speak and act with respect
  • Keep hands and feet to yourself
  • Treat others as you wish to be treated
‘In everything, treat others as you would want them to treat you’  Matthew 7v12

Church School

We are very proud of our Church School status which is central to the ethos of the school and permeates all aspects of its life. We believe that Jesus Christ is at the heart of all that we do and we endeavour to deliver his message to all the children who attend AYJS.

We believe that it is important to provide the children at AYJS with a variety of Worship Styles, enabling them to see and understand that there is no one fixed approach and that worshipping God can take on many forms. It can be still and silent or loud and noisy with lots of action! The crucial thing is that the children find it memorable and know that it is a time when they can come closer to God.

We reach out into our community and receive worship support from the following people and groups:

  • St Andrews Church, Bishopthorpe
  • Bishopthorpe Methodist Church
  • YoYo (York Schools and York Trust)
  • The Local ‘Open the Book’ Team
  • Local Lay Preachers
  • Foundation Governors
  • The School Worship Team
  • The School ‘Jesus and Me’ (‘JAM’ Club)
  • Riding Lights Theatre Company
  • iSingPOP
  • The Archbishop of York

Religious Education Curriculum

Religious Education assumes an important role in our school curriculum and is a fundamental feature of school life generally. The Religious Education curriculum aims to develop the child’s awareness of religion and the religious beliefs and practices, which influence the lives of so many people. Religious Education is part of the core curriculum, and contributes to the overall aims of education to promote the spiritual, moral and cultural development of pupils at the school and to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

It is taught in accordance with the requirements of the City of York Agreed Syllabus (SACRE 2021-2026). Parents retain the right to withdraw their children on religious grounds from this subject. Please also see RE Curriculum links.

Collective Worship

In the daily acts of Collective Worship we aim to:

  • Encourage children to appreciate and live out our Christian values.

  • Have regard for the beliefs and practices of the Church of England

  • Acknowledge and build a special relationship between the school and the parish church

The spiritual, social, cultural, and moral welfare of our pupils, whatever their background, is of prime concern to us at school. However, Christian values are built into our ethos and teaching, and are reflected in the cycle of themes on which our daily acts of worship are based.

Collective Worship is organised on a whole school basis, and is led by staff, clergy, visitors and the pupils themselves. One of the ways our school expresses its Christian character is by having services in our local church each term.

Parents do have the right to withdraw their children on religious grounds from acts of Collective Worship, but we believe that pupils so excluded would miss an important part of school life. If any parents wish to exercise their right, they are asked to discuss this matter with the Headteacher, and alternative arrangements will be made.

The Reflection Area

The Reflection Area is a very special and quiet space that we have created for our pupils. In today’s sometimes chaotic and confusing world, it is increasing evident that at times, we all need a quiet time and place to gather our thoughts and reflect. This is the same for many of our lovely children at AYJS. The area is fenced and has an arched entrance, leading up a pathway, to a centre pebble mosaic of a dragonfly. We have also included a wooden cross, bird bath, an outdoor mirror, raised flower beds, a gazebo, seating and a beautiful stained glass piece of artwork, which has been thoughtfully designed by one of our pupils.

Worship Team

The Worship Team is a group of pupils taken from all the year groups who share our Christian Values. They meet regularly to consider worship themes and plan whole school worship. They often lead worship. Their role is to focus on our Christian ethos within our school, our community and the wider world.

JAM Club (Jesus and Me Club)

We run a weekly JAM club. We welcome all children to come and explore their christian faith, learn about Bible heroes and stories, play games, do crafts and quizzes, make music, pray together and have fun!

Governance

South York Multi-Academy Trust (SYMAT) encourages all member schools to be self-governing, helping support their responsibility to serve their communities first and foremost. This is achieved through the appointment of a governing body to provide focused governance at the local level. For full details of SYMAT’s governance arrangements and information regarding the Trustees and Members, please see the MAT website

A single local governing body was created in March 2023 to provide governance across both Bishopthorpe Infant School (BIS) and Archbishop of York’s Church of England Junior School (AYJS), working closely with the Executive Headteacher newly appointed to lead both schools.

Membership of the governing body is made up of a number of different types of governor, reflecting each school’s heritage and our key stakeholders:

  • 2 Parent governors (1 BIS and 1 AYJS)
  • 2 Staff governors (1 BIS and 1 AYJS)
  • 3 Foundation governors (reflecting AYJS’s status as a Church of England school)
  • 5 Trust appointed governors

Between them, the governors bring a blend of skills and experience that is greatly valued. The governing body meets formally six times a year, once every half term, and governors also undertake a number of other responsibilities in support of both schools. All are united in their shared commitment to see our schools continue to flourish and grow at the heart of our community.

Meet the Governors

Derek Angood (Co-opted)

After completing my training at St John’s, I spent 40 years as a Teacher, Deputy-Head Teacher and Head Teacher. I worked in local schools starting at Wigginton, then Clifton Without and then as Deputy Head at Hob Moor. I was Head Teacher at Appleton Roebuck from 1998 until I retired in 2015.

During my teaching career, I had many loose associations with Bishopthorpe school. Bill Matthews, who was Head Teacher in the 80’s, was a college friend and neighbour and we played in the same football teams for years. When Mr Beecham was Head Teacher, his wife was a teacher at my school, and the two schools developed positive sporting and music links which lasted until I retired.

I have lived in Bishopthorpe since 2003 and since I retired, I have been happy to help in school from time to time in various voluntary roles. There are aspects of working in school that are enjoyable and rewarding and I was grateful to be reminded of that. When I heard that the school was short of a Governor, I thought I might be able to help. As a staff representative and Head Teacher, I have served on Governing bodies for about 30 years, albeit in a slightly different capacity to this time.

Clare Ashton (Co-opted)

I am mother to a daughter and son, both of whom attended AYJS. In my professional life, I am a forensic psychologist, working with individuals with complex and challenging behaviour. This means I bring passionate experience in working collaboratively with everyone (be that adult or child) to explore a broad range of potential alternative solutions to problems and supporting people to find the best way forward in difficult situations. Working as a manager in the public sector also means that I am used to working effectively and efficiently in order to ensure the public get the best possible value for money, which will hopefully come in useful when I serve on the resources committee.

Revd Simon Bray (Ex-officio)

I took up the post of priest in charge of St Andrew’s (along with St Chad’s and St Clement’s in York) in July 2021, prior to which I worked at Bishopthorpe Palace for three years as Archbishop’s Chaplain. As well as being an ex officio governor I am also a parent at AYJS: our elder son joined Year 6 when we first moved to the village, and our younger son is in Year 6 this year, having joined AYJS at the beginning of Year 3. I am a keen musician, having studied music at university first time round, and an injured and ageing footballer. I look forward to supporting the leadership, staff and pupils of this fantastic school and to maintaining the great link between the church and the school.

Jamie Cooke (Community)

As a father of two who both attend AYJS, I was delighted to join as a Governor in 2021. In my professional life I work in the Insurance industry and am a qualified Actuary with an in-depth knowledge of the financial services industry and lots of experience at solving complex problems. I hope the former comes in handy and the latter is not required too often!

Outside of work and family life I enjoy keeping fit and am a Karate black belt with the British Karate and Kickboxing Association. I enjoy playing football and running.

Ann Cox (Foundation Governor)

I feel very privileged to have been made a Foundation Governor at AYJS.

I am now the Chair of the Education and Strategic Planning Committee and a link Governor for Special Needs Children and Religious Education. I am also Vice Chair of Governors at Knavesmire Primary School and have been a governor there for around 14 years. I am a freeman of the City of York and treasurer of the Micklegate Stray.

I moved to Bishopthorpe about 7 years ago to be near to my daughter and family. I have two granddaughters at AYJS, Willow and Rowan Clark. I am a member of St Andrew’s Church in Bishopthorpe and I am a member of the PCC and am on the Finance Committee and take an active part in the life of the Church. In any spare time that I have, I enjoy spending time with my family, gardening and reading.

Jane Flint (Parent Governor)

I am a mother of two girls, one currently at AYJS and the other at the Infant School. In my professional life I am a Primary School teacher in York. I also teach French classes in the local area. I was delighted to join the Governing Body in 2022. I have a passion for ensuring all children are given the educational opportunities to meet their full potential and flourish in their individual strengths. In my spare time, I enjoy mountain walking with my family and outdoor swimming.

Fiona Phillips (Chair / Parent Governor)

I am a mother of two girls that have been through the infant and junior school and now attend Fulford School.  In my professional life I am a Consultant in Public Health Medicine with a passion for improving healthy lifestyles.  I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the best health possible and should have the right tools to be able to achieve this.  I feel privileged to have a role on the governing body, as a good education plays a huge part in determining an individual’s future health outcomes.  As a governor, I would like to share this expertise and support AYJS in ensuring our children have the right foundations and are set on the path to having a healthy and fulfilling life. I am the link governor for PSHE, Physical Education and Safeguarding.

Simon Sykes (Community Governor)

I have been a Governor for a number of years and hold a position on the Resources Committee and Health and Safety Committee.  I have also been involved with various project committees.

In my personal life I am a building contractor and can use my skills to advise on various aspects in School.

My hobbies and pastimes include walking, skiing, travelling and gardening.  I am also involved with the Bishopthorpe Gala and hep with local pantomimes.

School History

Our Little Village School

‘Archbishop of York’s school’ was first built in 1763 on ‘Lord’s waste’, a piece of land belonging to Archbishop Drummond.

In 1846 Archbishop Harcourt built a new school. His building is now used as the playgroup. The buildings on school lane were transformed into a girl’s school. We think the girls joined the boys in 1893 when the old school was sold. The school stayed in these new buildings for 120 years. Many older people in the village remember going to this school.

Our school was built on the old playing field in 1976. Children who attended the school had the age range of 5-11 years old, until 1973 when the infant school opened.

The first headmaster was Mr. Alan Clementson. Working with him were five teachers. They worked with the 205 children attending the school.
