In September this year, Archbishop of York’s Church of England Junior School was very pleased to welcome Archbishop Stephen (Cottrell) on his first visit to meet the children and staff. He spoke to the children about the Queen’s ‘Green Canopy’ tree planting initiative to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. As part of his presentation, Archbishop Stephen set the children a motivational challenge to each write a creative piece of poetry about trees. He explained that the selected shortlisted poems would then be passed to him to make the final decision on the winning pieces. The successful poets would then be invited to Bishopthorpe Palace to plant a tree in the grounds and enjoy a special afternoon accompanied by their parents and Headteacher. Our children excitedly took up the challenge and there was great anticipation to discover the identities of the chosen poets who would receive the honour to plant the trees.
On 22 November, three of our children (Kamso, Elsa and Oscar) had the great privilege of attending Bishopthorpe Palace and experienced a truly special and memorable afternoon, which they, and their proud families, will never forget. Our children read out their poems in front of the assembled adults at the event and took great pride in planting their designated tree as a very special contribution towards the ‘Green Canopy’ project. The wonderful event was concluded with a beautiful Afternoon Tea at the Palace.
