Background:

I started studying the piano at the age of 4 before beginning flute studies at the age of 9.  I was fortunate to be taught by inspirational music teacher Barry Russell at Archbishop Holgate’s Grammar School as it was then.

Because of this, I had the opportunity to play in various ensembles at the Royal Albert Hall and South Bank Concert Halls in London as part of the National Festival of Music for Youth competition and the BBC School’s Prom.

As a teenager I took an active part in music at the church I attended, including playing flute on various recordings and touring with the church choir.  I also played piano and flute in various theatre productions in York.

I studied at Huddersfield Polytechnic, specialising in flute with piano as a second study and achieved a Graduate Diploma in Music. I played in the polytechnic orchestra and various ensembles as well as holding down a pub pianist job during term time.

I continued my studies at the University of York, where I achieved a Master of Arts Degree, specialising in music performance on the flute.

I worked full time at St. Michael-le-Belfrey Church in York as Assistant Director of Music, responsible for developing the music for a more youth orientated service as well as leading the choir and instrumental ensemble for a major carol service in York Minster.

More recently I worked as Director of Music for Queen Ethelburga’s School, a position I held for six years.  This involved leading choirs and instrumental groups as well as teaching GCSE, A Level and BTec music.  Several students went on to study music at universities, including one student who currently attends the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

Over many years I have taught a small number of students privately.  I am now developing this into a full-time private teaching practice in and around York.  I am still heavily involved in developing the music at the church I attend as well as, with my wife, enjoying the roller-coaster ride that is all part of bringing up our four delightful children.
